Traditional Sauna Delivery Day: Heavy Timber Freight, Inventory, and Handling

A traditional sauna kit arrives as timber — a lot of it, on pallets, at the curb. It is the heaviest delivery in our collections and the one where preparation pays most. Have hands, a clear route, and somewhere dry to stack it before the truck is booked.

What to expect

A barrel or cabin sauna ships on one to three pallets containing wall boards or staves, roof components, benches, the door with glass, the heater and stones, and hardware. Total shipment weight commonly runs from several hundred pounds for a small barrel to well over a thousand for a larger cabin. Delivery is LTL freight to the curb by liftgate; the driver does not move pallets onto your property, does not carry timber, and does not unpack.

Lead times are set by the manufacturer and carrier, differ by product, and are shown on each product page and in our Shipping Policy. White-glove delivery is available as an option, priced separately, and must be elected at the time of order; it is never included by default. For a sauna kit on a difficult site, it is frequently the right choice.

Prepare the ground

PeopleLong boards want two carriers. Arrange at least two able adults, three for a larger cabin.
RouteWalk it with the longest component length in mind. Gates, corners, and slopes are the obstacles; a hand truck or dolly helps on hard surfaces, and plywood sheets protect lawns and make a path over gravel.
StagingA dry, flat area next to the pad where timber can be stacked off the ground on bearers and covered. Timber that sits in wet grass for a week swells and stains.
Tools at handA utility knife for banding, gloves, a tarp, and your phone charged for photographs.

Before you sign

With the driver present, walk every pallet. Count pallets against the delivery paperwork. Look for broken banding, shifted loads, crushed or wet packaging, cracked or split boards visible through the wrap, and — with particular care — the crate or box containing the door glass and the heater. Photograph every side of every pallet and every label.

The TMA Notation Formula. If you see anything, write it on the bill of lading using three elements: specific damage + exact location + approximate size. For example: "Crushed corner, top right of crate, approximately 6 inches." Not "damaged." Not "subject to inspection." A vague note is treated by carriers as no note at all.

Sign only after any notes are written. Notation records the facts; it does not refuse the freight. If a pallet has collapsed or the glass crate is visibly destroyed, refuse that pallet and call us before the truck leaves.

Inventory the same day

Unband and lay out the components against the manufacturer's packing list the day of delivery or the next morning. Kits contain many similar boards; sort them by type as you go and count. Check the door glass, the heater, and the control unit for concealed damage. Photograph anything missing or damaged and email concierge@teakandmarbleatelier.com with your order number immediately — concealed-damage and shortage claims are time-limited, and a build that stalls for a replacement board is far more disruptive than a claim filed on day one.

Keep all packaging until any claim is closed.

Handling timber safely

Simple rules that prevent the common injuries

Two people on any board longer than you are tall	Long boards flex, swing, and catch on things; solo carrying is how backs and door frames get hurt.
Gloves, closed shoes, eye protection when cutting banding	Steel banding springs when cut; timber edges splinter.
Stack flat, off the ground, on bearers, covered	Boards stacked on edge or on soil bow and stain.
Carry glass and the heater last, deliberately	They are the two components you cannot improvise a replacement for.
Lift with the legs; do not twist under load	The lumber is the easy part of the day only if nobody is hurt moving it.
