About this review

The Heartwood Review is TMA's ongoing survey of peer-reviewed research on thermal and recovery therapies — cold plunge, sauna, contrast therapy, and red light — curated for accuracy, not sold for effect.

Edited by Gregg H. Grossman. Published by Teak & Marble Atelier, Ltd., which sells sauna, cold-plunge and red-light equipment (why we say so). The Heartwood Review is not itself a peer-reviewed publication. Nothing here is medical advice or a claim about any TMA product.

Who publishes this, and why we say so

The Heartwood Review is published by Teak & Marble Atelier, Ltd., which sells sauna, cold-plunge and red-light equipment. Its editor selects and approves studies without regard to whether the findings favor those products.

We state that first because a reader is entitled to know that the publisher has a commercial interest in the subject. The Review exists to put the published research where a buyer, a patient or a clinician can read it in plain language, including the studies that find little or no effect and the ones that say marketing has outrun the evidence. The clinical content is the peer-reviewed research itself, cited and linked on every entry; the Review adds selection, a plain-language summary and the limits, and nothing else. Its rules, below and on the methodology page, are written for a publisher with that interest: no product is ever named or described, no finding is ever tied to any equipment, and unfavorable results are published with the same prominence as favorable ones.

Masthead

Gregg H. Grossman, Editor and Publisher. Gregg selects the studies the Review covers, reads every entry against its source before publication, approves or declines it, and answers corrections. He is not a physician, and the Review gives no medical advice; the clinical content is the published, peer-reviewed research itself, cited and linked on every entry. His background is in law, including twelve years defending medical malpractice, personal injury and products liability cases for insurers, which is where he learned to read clinical evidence for what it does and does not show. He is also the founder of Teak & Marble Atelier, Ltd., which publishes the Review and sells the equipment the research concerns. That interest is disclosed on every page, and the Review's rules exist because of it.

How entries are selected

The Review monitors PubMed and Europe PMC for new peer-reviewed studies on cold-water immersion, contrast therapy, traditional and infrared sauna, and photobiomodulation. Candidate studies are limited to human research published in indexed journals. A first draft of each summary is written by software from the published article; the editor reads it against the source, checks the design, sample and limits, and approves or declines it. Nothing is published automatically. Summaries are in the Review's own words, no abstract text is reproduced, and every entry links to the original article by DOI and PubMed identifier. The full process, including the search queries and the running count of studies published and declined, is on the methodology page.

Editorial standards

Summaries state study design, sample size and duration up front, and report null, mixed or negative findings with the same prominence as favorable ones. The Review does not give protocols, dosages or medical advice, and does not describe or reference any product sold by Teak & Marble Atelier; an automated check refuses any entry that mentions the publisher or its products, and the editor's review is the second check. Where a study raises safety questions, concerns a vulnerable population, has a very small sample, discloses industry funding, or could be misread as a claim about consumer equipment, it receives additional scrutiny before publication.

Corrections

If an entry misstates a study, write to concierge@teakandmarbleatelier.com with the subject line “Heartwood Review correction”, citing the entry and the source. The editor answers every correction request. Corrected entries show an updated “reviewed” date on the page; an entry that cannot be corrected is withdrawn.
